Day 18: Healthy Cooking Challenge
Turkey Dogs and Sweet Potato Fries
Ok, so don’t shoot me but I have done a really good job of not using a lot of boxed, canned, or prepackage foods. Sometimes life just doesn’t allow for those types of meals. Plus I also just love a good ol fashioned America hot dog (or turkey sausage)!
I’m at least trying to keep this a little healthier by using some turkey sausages….
I also picked some whole wheat buns….
and opted for the sweet potato fries….
The turkey sausages cut the fat and calories in half!
To really bring out the flavors of the turkey sausages I grilled mine. I highly recommend doing that step. I also suggest making a cut about halfway through the sausage lengthwise to get more surface area when grilling. I promise you will never grill them any other way.
Make sure your grill is piping hot! I let my grill heat up for about 15 minutes before I place the dogs.
While the grill was heating up I placed the sweet potato fries in the toaster oven. My favorite little toaster oven!!! They need to go around 20-25 minutes to get really crispy!!
Then I start my dogs. I like a good char on mine so they go for about 5 minutes per side to get nice and charred. Here’s my little secret for warm, steamy buns….
Wrap them up in foil and place them on the cool side of the grill and close the lid. Give them about 5 minutes and you will have a nice warm, steamy bun. I love it!!
Use your favorite toppings and feel free to pick a dipping sauce for your fries (or skip it to save some calories).
I made a maple mustard sauce. 1/4 c mayo, 1/4c Dijon mustard, and 2 tbls of maple syrup.
Sit back and enjoy. I’m sorry but it doesn’t get any better than a grilled sausage and sweet potato fries!!
